Every Joe Slovo has a website nowadays and Anne Hirsch thought it’s about time she had her own. It was either that or a sex tape, but she said that was ‘so 2000 and late!’ Born and bred in the beautiful city of Bloemfontein (well, it will be once they finish building it). Anne moved to Cape Town to pursue her dreams of becoming an actress. Many have said she is South Africa’s answer to Angelina Jolie, although none of these people could be tracked down for comment. Anne is often compared to comedian Eddie Izzard. ‘Our style is very similar’ she said in a recent interview, ‘We both like wearing dresses and over the top make up. Can’t stand his humour though.’
With six years of acting training under her belt, including a Masters degree from UCT with a focus on comedy, she has performed and co-written 3 succesful one woman shows. Anne went on to win SABC’s ‘So you think you’re funny’ season 2 crowning her the funniest new stand-up comedian in the country. Since then she is the only white woman to have ever performed as part of David Kau’s Blacks Only comedy tour, performing to sold out audiences in Bloemfontein, Joburg, Cape Town and Durban. She forms part of the improv troupe Theatresports and SA’s all female comedy collective – Cracks Only. Anne also hosts The Anne Hirsch Show – South Africa’s first (s)talk show and won Glamour Magazine’s 2013 Woman of the Year in the ‘Next Big Thing’ category. She also hosts the FOBLO Bulletin, a weekly ‘what’s on guide’ to Cape Town on Youtube.
“The performer is one of those individuals blessed with charisma and quirky appeal. She gives the audience an impeccably crafty performance whilst using her delightfully idiosyncratic sense of humour.” Peter Tromp, Cape Times
“Anne Hirsch’s solo performance, her quick punning and easy rapport with the audience, is hugely welcome in a town shockingly short of female comedians” Brent Meersman, Mail & Guardian
